Skillful Living Activity #1: Mindfulness • what is mindfulness? • Jon Kabat-Zinn (2015) • “the awareness that arises from paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally” 1 Skillful Living Activity #1: Mindfulness • Thich Nhat Hanh (Plum Village website) • “Mindfulness is the energy of being awake to the present moment. It is the continuous practice of touching life deeply in every moment of daily life. To be mindful is to be truly alive, present, and at one with those around you and with what you are doing. We bring our body and mind into harmony while we wash the dishes, drive the car, or take our morning shower.” 2 Skillful Living Activity #1: Mindfulness • Thich Nhat Hanh 3 Skillful Living Activity #1: Mindfulness • Sharon Salzberg • “We apply our effort to be mindful, to be aware in this very moment, right here and now, and we bring a very wholehearted effort to it. This brings concentration. It is this power of concentration that we use to cut through the world of surface appearances to get to a much deeper reality.” 4 Skillful Living Activity #1: Mindfulness • Sharon Salzberg 5 Skillful Living Activity #1: Mindfulness • Kristin Neff • “Mindfulness brings us back to the present moment and provides the type of balanced awareness that forms the foundation of selfcompassion…[T]he real treasure offered by mindfulness – its most amazing gift – is that mindfulness provides us with the opportunity to respond rather than simply react.” 6 Skillful Living Activity #1: Mindfulness • Kristin Neff 7 Skillful Living Activity #1: Mindfulness • there is ‘formal practice’ to mindfulness, which is meditation • we will look at this next week • there is ‘informal practice’ to mindfulness • together, both practices comprise living mindfully 8 Skillful Living Activity #1: Mindfulness • benefits of mindfulness among university students • decreased reactivity and depression • increased curiosity and tolerance • improved patience and self-acceptance • enhanced relationships • better deal with stress • less likely to have difficulties with drinking • better self-control 9 Skillful Living Activity #1: Mindfulness • 1: pay attention, be aware of what you are doing, feeling, and thinking • eating; feeling sad?; negative thoughts? • 2: be fully present • wherever you go, there you are • wherever your body is, your mind is there too • 3: nonjudgmental, acceptance of your current state or situation • observe the present moment impartially, with detachment, without evaluation, with kindness 10
